The European Commission proposes that the electronic version of the Official Journal shall obtain legal status. The member states publish an increasing number of binding legal cases electronically and therefore, the Commission wants to facilitate the accessibility for both companies and citizens.
The first issue of the magazine was published in 1952 by the European Coal and Steel Community and since then, the number of editions has increased constantly. Today, it is published in all the Union’s 23 official languages and the editions are available printed as well as electronically. However, only the printed edition has legal status. The proposal must obtain unanimous support of the Council of Ministers and the assent of the European Parliament before it can enter into legal force.
